DETOX
SCIENTISTS HAVE BECOME INCREASINGLY WORRIED
that even extremely low levels of some environmental contaminants may have significant damaging effects on our bodies, and that fetuses are particularly vulnerable to such assaults. Some of the chemicals that are all around us have the ability to interfere with our endocrine systems, which regulate the hormones that control our weight, our biorhythms and our reproduction.
Synthetic hormones are used in Traditional Medicine every day clinically to prevent pregnancy, control insulin levels in diabetics, compensate for a deficient thyroid gland and alleviate menopausal symptoms. You wouldn’t think of taking these drugs without a prescription, but we unwittingly do something similar every day. These chemical exposures contribute to obesity, endometriosis, diabetes, autism, allergies, cancer and other diseases. Scientists and clinicians across diverse disciplines are concerned that the efforts of the EPA and the FDA are insufficient in the face of the complex cocktail of chemicals in our environment.
A staggering and sobering fact is that a report by the Environmental Working Group found an average of 287 contaminants in the blood of newborns, including mercury, fire retardants, pesticides and the Teflon chemical PFOA. Of the 287 chemicals detected in umbilical cord blood, it is known that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.
Our bodies naturally detoxify every day. Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, skin and at the cellular level. If your energy level is low, if you have been taking many medications that have not been eliminated from your system, a weekend detox may help you feel better.
While a “water only” fast is pretty straightforward, many other approaches to cleansing are more involved. These range from nutritional modifications, if necessary to “cleansing boosters,” including herbal laxatives, colonics, probiotics (that replenish healthy bacteria), and antioxidants. Relaxation techniques — prayer, meditation, massage therapy, sauna, aromatherapy baths, deep breathing exercises, walking — help round-out a good cleanse.
General recommendations for natural detox include:
1. Plenty of deep colored vegetables, herbs and algae in your diet
2. Fasting with lemon water, cayenne pepper and maple
3. Juice! Kale, celery, cucumber, beet, carrot, lettuce, ginger and lemon are all excellent choices for neutralizing acidity in the body, increasing our nutrient levels, and flushing our systems of unwanted materials
4. Enemas, Professional Colonics, or a Colon Cleanse
5. Eat a diet of predominantly high water content, ripe fruits, green leafy vegetables, and juiced vegetable
6. Sweat it out!
7. Get plenty of sleep!
More advanced cleanses involve proprietary combinations of herbs and neutriceuticals for parasite cleanse, kidney cleanse, the bowel program, and the liver cleanse. Strict protocols for metal removal via IV chelation therapy are also available.
