OXYTOCIN

The Love Hormone

It has been branded the LOVE HORMONE. Oxytocin is a powerful hormone that acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain. It plays a significant role in human behaviors, including recognition, sexual arousal, and trust. This hormone is stimulated dramatically during sex. It has
been suggested to be an essential hormone in social action.

Oxytocin has emerged as a potent modulator of diverse aspects of interpersonal relationships. Oxytocin appears to work closely
with several other neurotransmitter networks, including the dopaminergic reward circuit, and depends on sex-specific hormonal influences. Oxytocin can induce anti-stress-like effects such as reduction of blood pressure and cortisol levels. It increases pain thresholds, exerts an anxiolytic-like effect, and stimulates various types of positive social interaction. The intensity of orgasm in both men and women has also been found to correlate with plasma Oxytocin levels.

In 129 romantically involved adults whose partner expressed gratitude to them in the lab, greater Oxytocin over the prior 24 hr was associated with greater perceptions of the expresser’s responsiveness and gratitude, as well as greater experienced love, but not general effective
reward. Moreover, in this one-time conversation, higher Oxytocin acted like rose-colored glasses, attenuating the effect of a partner’s behaviorally coded expressive behavior on perceptions of the expresser’s responsiveness.
